I think I have seen why there are so many Cartridge sizes. Winchester tried a Winchester Super Short Magnum but of course they need 3 sizes.

Image

Remington comes out with a short Magnum for short action Bolt Rifles .300 Rem Short Action Ultra Mag. Winchester follows with .300 Winchester Short Mag. and Ruger does not want to be left behind comes up with the .300 Ruger Compact Magnum. 3 non interchangeable cartridges with about the same size and power.

Of course they all need them in various caliber. Here are some of the Win S Mags.

Added in 25 minutes 34 seconds later:
You found an old Winchester Lever Action. It must be a 30-30 or is it? They were made in a lot of sizes here are just 3 that I have in boxes. A . 219 ZIPPER or A 25-35 Winchester or possibly a .32 Winchester Special.

I like the old way of making cartridge boxes by printing the caliber on the top as well as just the end caps.
