For years when I bought a different caliber rifle the first accessory I bought was a LEE LOADER Kit. The pound them in, pound them out worked to keep the price down on the ammo. 243 Win, 30-30, 30-06, 35 Rem. 350 Rem. Mag. 303 Brit. and 30-40 Krag all came home with the Lee reloading kit. Yes they were limited and slow to load but I could reload that expensive box or 2 of factory ammo that also came home with me. The Lee Loader kit cost about $10 and did a decent job of reloading in the 1960s and 70s. Of course once I had graduated to the RCBS single stage press, a box of dies was a much faster way to reload my rifle rounds. Over the years I have owned and reloaded almost 20 different Center Fire Caliber rifles.

I have had my eye looking for a 257 Weatherby Rifle for years and a couple years ago I saw one for a reasonable price. Less than $800 and I thought that I had found my dream gun but I thought that I ought to check out the price of factory ammo. I went to the the ammo department and almost fell over when I saw the price. It was about $95 for a box of 20 rounds. Brass, dies, bullets, powder, etc. put that gun off my dream list. I could not imagine shooting at $5 a round no matter how cool the rifle was.

Well 30 years ago I had a 416 Rigby and back then ammo was $112.00 a box of 20. I kept it for a few years. Reloaded for it. But I can't feal anyone's pain complaining
About today's prices paying 35 or 40 dollars for a box of ammo

Hi Biglever,
Back in 1983 the 416 Rigby cartridge was so rare among cartridge collectors that IAA decided that they should contract to have a dummy 416 Rigby made and sold to their members. I was more than glad to pay about $10 to get that single Dummy Round for my collection. Within 10 years or so someone was making new 416 Rigby rifles and Federal Cartridge was loading new ammunition for them. Obviously Federal Cartridge had found a cartridge that they could make a bit of money at $112.00 a box. Who made the 416 Rigby Rifle that you had ? Soon Weatherby added a 416 round to their line of Cartridges and Remington also added a 416 to their line. Now we have a choice of 3 different 416 caliber rounds just in case there is rouge Elephant or rouge Cape Buffalo wandering around your back 40.

Mine was a Ruger #1,
There was a guy in carthridge New York , that made a bullets for the 416. He started with a 41 mag pistol bullet
Reswaged it and filled the hollow point with a poly ball tip he called it, can't remember exactly but it came out to be around 189 gr. He called it his varmint bullet.
I used them on deer, there was lots of meat damage.

I also had the Ruger #1 in 7 mag
And 45/70, I have 3 boxs of custom bullets I used in the Ruger, 325 gr. Spitzer bullets, I should load some up for shooting in my marlin, load two up one in the chamber
One in the mag tube.

Back when I got the Rigby, the gun shop had another Ruger #1 in 404 Jeffrey, I wanted that to, but there was a factory recall on the Jeffrey and the dealer sent the gun back, and I never seen it again.
I had big bore bug for a wile.

Big bores are really nice. Back in 1989 my buddy won a Moose Permit in northern N H. His big rifle at the time was a Winchester Model 70 in 458 Winchester. He did think it was a bit too powerful so we did some reloading and settled with a 350 gr. bullet going around 2000 fps. This was a 3 day hunt and he felt we needed to see horns on any moose we would shoot. He chose me as his back up hunter and I had the 45-70 Bolt action Siam Mauser. I used 45-70 rounds pulling the 405 bullets and adding enough powder to send the 405 bullet around 1800 fps vs the 1150 factory fps. We hunted for the 3 days and did not see any moose with horns but we did see about 20 cows. It was his hunt and we did not see any horns on any of the moose. I would have been happy shooting a cow but It was his permit.

Even have road signs to warn driver's, were they cross the highway
