Does anyone have any experience baiting deer? I want to attract more deer to our camp. We were thinking of putting up salt licks.
By the way - this is baiting for viewing, not for hunting. :D

Baiting can only be done at certain times WITH THE PROPER PERMITS . Check with N H Fish And Game for regulations. Ask about planting food plots. Salt licks cannot be pure salt. Again Check with your local conservation officer.

Hi Jim,
I checked the NH Hunting Digest and couldn't find anything regarding baiting deer simply for the reason of watching them. The regulations all seem to pertain to "baiting and taking deer". Do you think they leave it up to the GW's discretion?

Hi 556NATO,
As I understand it you at very least have to have WRITTEN Land Owner Permission. If you own the land of course you can give your self permission. PLEASE at least talk to a Conversation Officer. We had a Very bad problem a couple years ago when some goodhearted people feed deer hay and wound up KILLING them Because a whitetail deer CANNOT Process Hay in their stomachs. Talk to the Game Warden or the N H Fish & Game Biologist.

Yes I will definitely call NH Fish & Game. We own the land so permission is not the issue and we don't want to hurt/kill the deer. Thanks for the input and I'll let you know what we find out.

Hi 556NATO,
While you are talking with then enquire about planting a food plot which I am told is easy and very effective.

I spoke with NH Fish & Game LE and was told that baiting during the hunting season is fine as long as it's marked with the hunters' name(s). A salt or mineral lick can be used as long as it's not 100% salt. On my own property the rules still apply although he said there is a "light grey area" there.
Planting a food plot is fine anytime and doesn't fall under those rules.

Always better to get to the real source. A proper food plot will have a positive effect for years.

I don't understand why you can't bait deer on your own property for viewing.

Baiting wild animals is controlled by State Law. There have been a number of cases on North Woods Law. One woman was baiting or feeding bears. In South Hampton there were a number of deer that died because of some well intentioned feeding of deer a few years ago.
