Why would someone join the French Foreign Legion?

What sort of a man joins the legion? Leaves everything behind him and signs up for at least five years. I know a lot of people (from south America and eastern Europe) sign up for French citizenship or the money. But what about the people with good backgrounds and had a good standard of life. I've heard of people joining up after university

I've been mulling it over and the only reasons I think they would join would be as follows.
1. They are dropped into a foreign countries army and learns a new language, it's like a totally new world and helps them realize themselves.
2. The adventure (though accompanied by boredom and sh!t living conditions).
3. The sense of vocation.
4. It will change you, probably for the better.

Is there anything that would attract someone to the legion?

Ok.........I couldn't resist!

A Captain in the foreign legion was transferred to a desert outpost. On his orientation tour he noticed a very old, seedy looking camel tied out back of the enlisted men's barracks. He asked the Sergeant leading the tour, "What's the camel for?"

The Sergeant replied, "Well sir it's a long way from anywhere, and the men have natural sexual urges, so when they do, uh, we have the camel."

The captain said, "Well if it's good for morale, then I guess it's all right with me."

After he had been at the fort for about 6 months the captain could not stand it any more so he told his Sergeant, "BRING IN THE CAMEL!!!"

The sarge shrugged his shoulders and led the camel into the captain's quarters. The captain got a footstool and proceeded to have vigorous sex with the camel. As he stepped, satisfied, down from the stool, and was buttoning his pants he asked the Sergeant, "Is that how the enlisted men do it?"

The Sergeant replied, "Well sir, they usually just use it to ride to town and pick up women..."

Back in 1962 I was a young U S Army soldier on duty in West Germany. I went on leave to Copenhagen, Denmark. While there drinking in a bar, a Denmark civilian came over and asking if I was a volunteer Soldier and I said yes. He then wanted to talk about his Service in the French Foreign Legion. He said that none of his countrymen would talk about as they thought he must have been nuts to join the legion. He had joined to see some of the world and find some adventure. He found the duty hard but it was an adventure. He talked to me for quit a while. I do not remember much about his service but he wanted me to assure him that he really was not crazy to want to see the world. Looking back on my 3 years in the U S Army I would say I would not want to have done any more but I would not want to have missed my 3 years service for my Country.
