Cowboys help cops corral a car thief Cowboy Cayden Cox hoped his performance in a recent team cattle-roping competition at The Horseman’s Park in Las Vegas would go viral. He just didn’t think the subject would be an alleged car thief instead of a steer. Midday on December 11, three men reportedly carjacked a vehicle near Sam’s Town hotel-casino, initiating a pursuit by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). At one point, the stolen vehicle collided with a horse trailer near the equestrian park, prompting one individual to escape on foot, jumping a fence and running across the fairgrounds. However, the gathering of cowboys wasn’t about to let the scoundrel get away. With the spirit of Old West justice, the group quickly surrounded the suspect, blocking any escape. “I’m like, ‘Oh shoot, we need to go catch the son of a buck.’ So I come running down through there and I almost knocked over this older gentleman and I felt bad, but I got to them, and right when I got to him … [there were] like 60 guys behind us,” Cox relayed to KTNV reporters. The cowboys threatened to lasso the suspected carjacker if he didn’t stop running. Cox told reporters he had his rope at the ready. The man, seeing that escape was futile, wisely dropped to his knees and a couple of cowboys pinned him to the ground before he could change his mind. Soon after, officers arrived on the scene and apprehended the man without resistance. Still, Cox, who happens to be a professional cattle roper, wished he had the opportunity to exhibit his lassoing skills. “I would have made sure I stuck it on him,” he assured the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “The best part of the whole deal was when the [police] helicopter flew over us and said ‘good job, ropers!’ or something like that; oh, that just made our day,” Cox said. Of course, such a unique event was filmed and posted to social media. Hundreds of thousands have watched the video, appropriately shot between two horses by cowboy Colton Payne. While it may not have been the type of viral presence Cox initially hoped for, it’s definitely one roping incident he’s not likely to forget soon. Shortly thereafter, LVMPD announced the arrest of Omar Zamora, Reynaldo Suarez and Jose Paredes for the carjacking. We hope this serves as a lesson to all those would-be thieves out there.
