Stamford police officer helps save overdose victim

A city police officer helped to save a woman who was overdosing on drugs in a car parked at Dunkin’ Donuts on West Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. Officers were called by someone who saw a woman siting in a car who appeared to be groggy and under the influence of narcotics, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said Wednesday. When officer James Webb arrived, he suspected the woman had overdosed and found several empty paper containers of suspected heroin in her car, Shawinsky said. Webb, a four-year veteran of the department, quickly administered two doses of the narcotic antidote Narcan to the woman, a 31-year-old resident of West Haven. Stamford patrol officers have been assigned to carry Narcan for nearly three years to use in cases of drug overdoses. Shawinsky said arriving medics administered several more doses to the woman before she slowly came out of her stupor. She was rushed to Stamford Hospital for further treatment. Police did not find heroin in the car, but they did find a crack pipe, Shawinsky said. The woman was not charged with a crime.
